Sunraysia Murray Group Training (SMGT) is a member of The Group Training Australia Network.

Established in 1983, SMGT is committed to providing excellence in all aspects of Apprenticeships, including recruitment, mentoring, support and training.

SMGT is a community based organisations aiming to maximise local employment opportunities and the quality of training for local people. SMGT is a not for profit locally run company, that is managed by a Board of Directors made up of local business people.

The Group Training system allows local businesses to enjoy a hassle free, cost effective and flexible way to employ Apprentices and Trainees.

Sunraysia Murray Group Training directly employs approximately 400 Apprentices and Trainees in a wide variety of trades and business sectors, making us one of the largest employers in the district.

How does it work?

It's simple... SMGT legally employ, then lease out Apprentices & Trainees to Host Employers.

SMGT look after all the costly and time consuming processes relating to their employment and training. That's right, we handle all paperwork, administration, wages, WorkCover … the lot!

Our Employment Consultants are experienced in dealing with Registered Training Organisations and will manage all training requirements. We also monitor the progress of Apprentices and Trainees, ensuring that their training and skill attainment is
progressing at an industry standard whilst keeping you updated on their progress.

SMGT is an excellent cash management tool - calculation of wages and other incidental costs (superannuation, annual leave, schooling etc.) are compiled and invoiced to you on a fortnightly basis.

SMGT is a hassle free service designed to relieve employers of the time consuming processes associated with employing and training new staff.

Gary Simpson

Chief Executive Officer
Gary oversees the management of SMGT. He has an extensive background in the provision of education services and organisational management and a commitment to the delivery of best practice services. Gary oversees the operational and strategic management of this multi-faceted company and its 35 staff and 3 offices. He has a vision to develop SMGT into a leading provider of employment and training services.


Dean Umback

Manager – Employment Services
Dean heads up the SMGT Group Training Department. Dean and his team of 12 staff employ over 400 apprentices and trainees throughout north west Victoria, south west New South Wales and metropolitan Adelaide. In operation since 1983, SMGT 's Group Training employs apprentices and trainees in a diverse range of trades and business sectors. They also provide a wide range of pre employment programs as well as general recruitment and labour hire services.



Rodney Martin

Manager – Sunraysia Skills Centre
Rodney manages training services provided to employers across Australia in the areas of Retail, Business/Administration, Hospitality, Building & Construction, Horticulture and Children’s Services. He oversees the delivery of short courses and training solutions across SMGT's service areas, in addition Rodney manages several community projects the Skills Centre deliver.




Fiona Scullino

Manager – Business Support Services
Fiona is responsible for overseeing the Business Support Services Department which comprises of the Reception, Administration, WorkCover, Information Technology, Payroll, Human Resource Management and Finance functions of the organisation. There are 8 staff within Business Support Services. As the name suggests, the Business Support Services Department provides integral support to the other Departments within the organisation.
